Munich Central Station

Illustration, Mural
A series of murals, displayed outside of Munich’s most monumental construction site.

At Kreatives I had the pleasure to create several oversized illustrations with a little nod to Munich’s commuters, travellers, and neighbours passing through the central station. It transforms the station into a cross-section of the city, its locals and visitors. A little less construction site. A little more love for Munich.

Design Process
After a first quick brainstorming session on paper, I started with little thumbnail sketches on the iPad. I explored different people and made sure to bring in divers characters as well as details that represent Munich like the traditional Oktoberfest visitor, a little pretzel sticker or the dachshund wearing proudly his sweater.

From there on, we decided on five motifs and I continued refining the sketches.

After the concept phase was signed off, the coloring began. Each shape had to be redrawn in Adobe Illustrator. I experimented with different color options to see which combinations would make the biggest impact on a large scale. In the end, we decided on a dark background to make the characters pop and bring in a swirly line.

Prototyping
To test the colors and actual size of the illustration we created a test print on the final material. This helped us to make sure all colors turn out as accurate as possible and see how much more details were necessary. We made sure to test it in all kind of lighting situations to see how the colors behave and even carried it all the way to central station to get a first feeling of the final product.
